Forget hoops, NFL has March Madness

March Madness is all about the NFL this year.

From Peyton Manning in Denver to Tim Tebow in New York.

From Sean Payton getting suspended for New Orleans’ bounty system to Saints players awaiting possible punishment for participating in it.

Not to mention the other big free agent signings. How did Mario Williams wind up in Buffalo? Answer: There’s 100 million reasons.

How about Calvin Johnson’s $132 million deal through 2019 with the Lions, merely the richest contract in NFL history, with Megatron getting $60 million guaranteed?

No matter what happens in the NCAA basketball tournament, with the Final Four in the Big Easy of all places, it can’t top what the NFL has produced in March.

And that’s with the draft, usually the focal point of the offseason, still a month away.

It has become impossible to escape NFL headlines pretty much since the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl ? that was Feb. 5. The next meaningful pro football game is more than five months away.

The past two weeks, in particular, have been off the charts for NFL interest.

“Fans love it and they crave it,” said Rich Gannon, the 2002 NFL Most Valuable Player and now a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “They don’t want an offseason and there hasn’t really been one, from the Super Bowl and the one-month buildup to the combine and free agency, and then to everything lately.

“I took my car in for service and three guys there, all they were saying was what about the Saints? And then the Tebow stuff; I am not surprised by that at all. And Peyton in Denver.”

In addition to the front-page news, there have been some offseason moves that would be a big deal ? in any other year.

Example A: A massive trade of picks between Washington and St. Louis already has spiced up the draft, with the Redskins in position to land Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (if Indy doesn’t take him at No. 1 instead of Andrew Luck).

Example B: The same Redskins and their division-rival Cowboys, each get dinged for huge salary cap reductions by the league.

Rarely does anything in sports push The Big Dance off center stage. But all the NFL action has done just that.

No reason to think it will stop now, with penalties for Saints defensive players sure to come, if not by the end of this unpredictable month then quickly in April.

By then, the Senate Judiciary Committee could be holding a hearing about the bounties that led to Payton being suspended for the 2012 season; former assistant Gregg Williams, who ran the program and now is defensive coordinator in St. Louis, getting barred indefinitely; New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis suspended for eight games and Saints assistant Joe Vitt for six games; and the team stripped of two second-round draft picks and fined $500,000.

“Let’s be real basic about it here,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, who is calling the bounty hearing. “If this activity were taking place off of a sporting field, away from a court, nobody would have a second thought (about whether it’s wrong). ‘You mean, someone paid you to go out and hurt someone?’

“It goes way beyond the rules of any sporting contest, at least team contest, to intentionally inflict harm on another person for a financial reward.”

It does grab attention; scandals always do. So two of the NFL’s transcendent quarterbacks came along to rescue the league’s image a bit: Manning and Tebow.

Anytime a four-time MVP changes addresses, it’s huge news. When that player never missed a start in 13 seasons before sitting out an entire year after four neck surgeries, interest is piqued a mile high.

“It is a huge plus to have a Peyton Manning on your roster,” Broncos boss John Elway said upon signing Manning to a five-year contract worth $96 million if fulfilled.

And a huge plus to have him in the league to deflect some attention from the bad vibes surrounding the Saints.

Ditto for Tebow, whose job disappeared in Denver when Manning joined the Broncos. Where else for him to land but with the Jets, who seem determined to win the back pages of the New York tabloids while their co-inhabitants at the Meadowlands, the Giants, win Super Bowls.

The Jets’ swift action ? well, swift until there was an eight-hour delay as the Jets discovered a clause in Tebow’s contract that would have cost them $5 million before it was renegotiated ? shifted the glare away from the Saints, as well.

In the middle of all this, the Cowboys had $10 million of salary cap space stripped and the Redskins lost a whopping $36 million, spread over this year and next. Yet both have found ways to spend enough on free agents to fill some holes.

What chaos could be ahead? Plenty.

? New Orleans star quarterback Drew Brees has yet to reach agreement on a new contract and, given the Saints’ precarious situation, imagine how ugly things might get if he ignores the franchise tag the team plunked on him and stays away from offseason workouts.

? With a rookie wage scale limiting financial investments, more blockbuster draft trades could happen. As it is, the Redskins mortgaged much of their future to move up four spots to get RG III. Yet, after his sensational pro day at Baylor, there’s thought Griffin has become a challenger to Stanford’s Luck as the top overall pick, owned by Indianapolis.

? Still out there ready to grab attention, if not many passes, is Terrell Owens. So might be Chad Ochocinco if the Patriots, as expected, release him. And Randy Moss, who didn’t even play in the NFL in 2011 and was no factor the previous year, landed in San Francisco.

? Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez. Just wait until the incumbent stumbles, even momentarily, and the Big Apple is rocked by screams from Tebow’s loyal legions.

? New jersey designs by Nike resemble the Oregon Ducks’ varied uniforms, causing a surge to ? or away from ? the merchandise shelves.

At least there are no labor battles to be waged for 4? months by America’s richest sports league and its players. Last year at this time, we were in the middle of the lockout. No one knew if the 2011 season would even happen.

“I think the NFL is in great shape,” Manning said, “with some great owners, great coaches and great people in leadership.”

Don’t forget plenty of newsmakers.

Anxiety boosts sense of smell

Friday, March 23, 2012

Anxious people have a heightened sense of smell when it comes to sniffing out a threat, according to a new study by Elizabeth Krusemark and Wen Li from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US. Their work? is published online in Springer’s journal Chemosensory Perception. The study is part of a special issue? of this journal on neuroimaging the chemical senses.

In animals, the sense of smell is an essential tool to detect, locate and identify predators in the surrounding environment. In fact, the olfactory-mediated defense system is so prominent in animals, that the mere presence of predator odors can evoke potent fear and anxiety responses.

Smells also evoke powerful emotional responses in humans. Krusemark and Li hypothesized that in humans, detection of a particular bad smell may signal danger of a noxious airborne substance, or a decaying object that carries disease.

The researchers exposed 14 young adult participants to three types of odors: neutral pure odor, neutral odor mixture, and negative odor mixture. They asked them to detect the presence or absence of an odor in an MRI scanner. During scanning, the researchers also measured the skin’s ability to conduct electricity (a measure of arousal level) and monitored the subjects’ breathing patterns. Once the odor detection task was over, and the subjects were still in the scanner, they were asked to rate their current level of anxiety. The authors then analyzed the brain images obtained.

They found that as anxiety levels rose, so did the subjects’ ability to discriminate negative odors accurately – suggesting a ‘remarkable’ olfactory acuity to threat in anxious subjects. The skin conductance results showed that anxiety also heightened emotional arousal to smell-induced threats.

The authors uncovered amplified communication between the sensory and emotional areas of the brain in response to negative odors, particularly in anxiety. This increased connectivity could be responsible for the heightened arousal to threats.

Krusemark and Li conclude: “This enhanced sensory-emotional coupling could serve as a critical mechanism to arouse adequate physiological alertness to potential insults.”

Facebook: You have the right not to give employers your passwords

Senator Blumenthal is writing a bill to ban this breach of privacy

In recent months, an increasing number of companies and organizations have been?asking prospective employees not only for their Facebook usernames, but also for their passwords. What started as a seemingly isolated?incident in North Carolina last year turned out to be a lot more common than we thought. Today, Facebook addressed the situation for the first time, and the company has this to say: You have the right not to give employers your passwords if and when they ask.

In an?update on the website, company Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan talked about how alarming the practice is, and how it compromises the?privacy of everyone on your friend list, along with your own. According to Egan: “It is important that everyone on Facebook understands they have a right to keep their password to themselves.” In fact, if you take a look at?Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, it’s a violation to share your password with anyone else.

Meanwhile, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT)?is currently writing a bill to prohibit any employer from ever practicing the unspeakable policy. The Senator told the website?Politico that he is deeply troubled by this tactic, and that his bill would be ready very soon.

Debt Reduction Forum

A debt reduction forum may specialize in a certain topic such as tax reduction or investments. In fact, there are so many websites for these types of discussions that an individual could search for many years and still not get to all of them. Forum visitors will discover that there are many ways to reduce taxes via charitable giving, the handling of exemptions formation of various types of companies, the judicious handling of private real estate investments and many others. There are so many options that people can get creative about how to handle money and even have some fun with it. However, the money is handled; it should be done with care with the understanding that doing it wrong could mean losing hundreds or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Common sense goes a long way towards reigning in foolish spending habits that usually are the cause of the debt in the first place. Understanding that spending more than the amount of income per month will quickly get someone into debt and borrowing money just to stay afloat. A debt reduction forum has many people contributing advice on experiences had utilizing debt reduction companies such as credit counseling centers, or those who get enslaved to cash advances with exorbitant interest rates. Wise people will listen to good counsel, and even listening to that conscience can prevent getting into some terrible situations. A good rule of thumb found on these forums is if the person cant pay the entire price when buying the product, then the purchase should not take place. Borrowing to make utility payments or to buy groceries is never a good idea and those in these forums will agree, if they have experienced this first hand.

Students away at college for the first time would do well to seek out advice via a debt reduction forum in order to hopefully, avoid obtaining credit cards with spending limits too tempting to resist. The unfortunate side of this is that these spending limits also carry with them extremely high annual percentage rates of interest that are hidden in the small print. Miss one payment and suddenly all that extra cash in the pocket is going to the credit card company! Students always need extra cash to spend at school for miscellaneous needs and so a credit card balance isn’t helping. There are students on these web pages that have some good advice to give if newcomers to the student world will take the advice to heart. “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:” (Proverbs 1:5).

Parents and those attaining close to the age of retirement may also find value in reading the wisdom inherent on a debt reduction forum. Deciding what to do with a large sum of money accumulated over a lifetime of working or how best to structure retirement plans and independent investments can prove to be a daunting task for people finding the jargon used in the investment world to be too confusing. Reading about others who have spent several years investing and learning about the various tools for doing so can be found that use every day language to discuss these topics. There is no intimidation here, and some may even prevent a person from making costly decisions by avoiding under performing investment vehicles or rogue investment advisors. This is gossip in the good sense, and can even prove to be more valuable than a visit to bureaus that report companies that like to draw in unsuspecting cash holders to make bad financial decisions.

Access to information via a debt reduction forum can be especially helpful for individuals looking to purchase a home for the first time. During these times of less than honest lenders, getting sound advice on the best type of mortgages and what lenders can or cannot be trusted is vital. The right decision in a lender and the type of mortgage obtained can mean the difference between success and default. Of course, if a default happens, this creates a whole new set of personal, financial and legal problems no person wishes to pursue. If default does happen though, there is a debt reduction forum out there ready and waiting to be accessed for each type of issue. Even those risk-taking entrepreneurs could benefit from accessing advice at a debt reduction forum when considering what type of company structure to enter in to, whether it is to incorporate or become a non-profit, the advice is out there. Creating the proper type of company structure can result in extra protection from creditors if the owners default on loans, or in saving bundles of money in taxes. Be wise; seek out the wisdom of others.

Egypt’s Coptic Pope Shenouda III Dies; Christians at Risk?

Thousands of Christian worshippers and prominent members of Egyptian society filled the somber hall of Cairo‘s St. Mark’s Cathedral and its surrounding streets on Tuesday, March 20, for the funeral of Pope Shenouda III, the spiritual leader of Egypt‘s Coptic Christian community.

Shenouda died on March 17 at age 88 after presiding over the largest Christian community in the Middle East for more than four decades. He was, at times, a controversial and conservative leader, upholding the church’s strict antidivorce policy and initially striving to keep Christian youths out of Cairo’s Tahrir Square during last year’s popular uprising.

(PHOTOS: Mourning the Loss of Egypt’s Coptic Pope)

But he enjoyed widespread popularity nonetheless, and his death comes at a critical time for Egypt’s Coptic Christian minority — roughly 5% to 10% of the country’s 85 million people. Egypt’s Christians have grown increasingly anxious over the past year since a popular uprising toppled President Hosni Mubarak and ushered in a new government dominated by Islamists. Mubarak did little to stem religious discrimination or rising sectarian tensions over the years. But incidents of sectarian violence — typically over issues of conversion, interreligious romances and the construction of churches — have increased dramatically since the uprising, sparked in part by the rise of extremist Islamist factions and the security vacuum left by Mubarak’s retreating security forces.

In October, a military crackdown on a Christian protest left 25 demonstrators dead and sparked a wave of Christian outrage as well as allegations that the country’s military leaders are not merely complicit but willing participants in the sectarian violence. In January, mobs of Muslims in the village of Sharbat forced the expulsion of a few dozen of the village’s Christian residents; they were angry over an alleged affair between a Christian man and a Muslim woman. Egyptian police and security forces did not intervene.

“We are very concerned,” says Mark Mor’os, an unemployed Cairo engineer and one of the mourners at the Pope’s funeral. “Our future without him is vague, and now we are entering the unknown.” The Copts have long been treated “like children,” he says: “We can’t build a church without asking for permission, and if we do, then they burn it down and come with swords to cut off our ears.”

“At least when Mubarak was the President, we knew who our Satan was,” he adds. “Now we don’t know who the next President is going to be, but we want [a Pope] who can stand in front of the next President and tell him, ‘No, this [sectarian abuse] can’t happen.”

Egypt’s first post-Mubarak presidential election is slated for June, and three of the most prominent front runners to emerge thus far are Islamists — one of them is a representative of the extremist Salafi branch of Islam, whose adherents have been blamed by Christians for recent attacks. Some Christians have predicted that they’ll be forced to flee en masse, as their counterparts did in Iraq, if the sectarian crisis deepens or if Egypt’s Islamist government pursues a stricter interpretation of Islamic law.

(VIDEO: Why They Protest: Egypt, Libya and Syria)

In apparent acknowledgment of growing Christian anxiety, leaders of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, which dominates Egypt’s new parliament, joined the Coptic bishops and priests, famous actors, presidential hopefuls, military officers and foreign dignitaries for Shenouda’s open-casket funeral on Tuesday. The Brotherhood and other prominent Islamists issued condolences, and the head of the ruling junta declared a nationwide state of mourning.

For two days prior, Christians had flocked to the church to view the Pope’s body, which was seated upright in full regalia. The sheer volume of mourners resulted in a stampede at the cathedral on Sunday, which government officials said left three people dead. Many Christian mourners sobbed uncontrollably throughout Tuesday’s funeral. As church officials struggled to carry the casket out of the cathedral at the end of the service, the push of hundreds yearning to touch the casket one last time nearly tipped it over on several occasions.

The selection of a new Pope could take months, as a council of church leaders and prominent members of the Coptic community meet to pick a worthy candidate. In the past, the Pope was chosen after influential Christians and church leaders had narrowed the possibilities to three; the names were then written on individual pieces of paper, and one was selected at random by a child. Suitable candidates have to be Egyptians by birth, be at least 50 years old and have served at least 15 years as a monk. Typically, the presiding head of the government — in this case, the head of Egypt’s ruling junta — must sign off on the decision.

And for Egypt’s Christians, the selection of their new spiritual leader will be awaited anxiously. “The Pope used to defend our rights, and he was the only one who stood up to the military council and asked them to stop killing our children,” says Mervat Mor’os, a mourner and housewife in the poor Cairo district of Imbaba, which has seen some of the worst sectarian clashes. “The new Pope must know that he, too, has to protect us from the extremists.”

Education and Training for Better Jobs

In todays fast moving economy, education and job training could be considered more of a necessity than an option. With so many people out there out of work and looking for jobs, the competition to fill any position could be really tough.

This is why you will have to have either the right training or education so that you will be able to stand a chance against the hundreds or even thousands of applicants vying for the same position. If you want to have a bright future, you need to consider your education or job training to land a better job. It really comes down to having the right combination of education and training for the right job.

There are so many different forms of education that you could take in order to land better jobs. High school is not the end, and if you are ready, you could pursue a degree or college program. Some prefer to enroll in colleges or universities, but for some unfortunate people, they cannot afford the luxury of time because of young families to do so.

Completing a degree could take up to years to be finished, and not everyone has the finances of not having to work and focusing on just studying.

This is the main reason why most people who are working decide to take a degree online through the many online colleges and universities program available. They are still able to do their jobs during the day, and they can still complete their education at their own pace.

This is one of the main benefits of online education such as enrolling for online degree. Having a degree could really help you to boost your opportunity to land better jobs. It also gives you the flexibility to still work while completing your studies.

For those who cannot afford years to complete their degree program, they can simply apply for job training. Just like online degrees, you can also apply for online job training. Job training is like getting a certification on a specific job. For example, if you are already good at plumbing, but you want to have an edge to land a stable job at companies offering plumbing services, you could enroll in online job training courses for plumbing.

Besides giving you a competitive edge, getting education and job training could help you to strengthen your knowledge in your respective field. This will make you much more competent in your work.

If you want to lead a better life and land better jobs, enrolling for online degree courses for education or taking up an online job training course could really help you to achieve your goals.

Education training jobs is the key to getting the job and career you want.
